This week’s featured track is “Hunab Ku” from the “Enigma” album. Often, A track will be born from a sound experiment inspired by some subject matter. In this case, the inspiration is the Mayan Tzolk’in calendar. The calendar is a combination of a 20 day cycle and a 13 day cycle yielding a 260 day cycle. The experiment was to create two percussive patterns. One being 20 beats long and the other, 13 beats, and allowing them to play off/against each other in parallel, creating a long 260 beat pattern. This rhythmic structure comes into play around 1:10 into the piece. The rest of the piece was built around this fundamental part.
